I was in grade school when I remember hearing my friends Ann and Joyel liked a band called the Newsboys. I heard the name, but not the music. Later on, in high school, I knew of artists Michael W. Smith, Kathy Troccoli, and Amy Grant because they had hits on the mainstream pop charts. Between high school and college I remember hearing of a band named dcTalk; I went to the mall to look at their cassette tape and considered buying it, but didn’t want to spend money on something I had never heard. In college, my InterVarsity Christian Fellowship staff worker, Dale Young, made it a point to place a bunch of Christian music CDs on the table every now and then and offer students the chance to take whatever they wanted, for free. So my first “Christian” CDs included some guy named Tony Vincent, who has since gone on to be a musical theatre star, and Rebecca St. James, who was Christian music’s favorite female virgin for almost two decades before marrying about a year ago...  Continue reading
